Just take a look at Diablo 2 (whose gameplay is very similar to GW's) and how many people still play that game. And it has a completely 2d graphics engine. Running at 800x600. And with the sole exception of letting people run the game at 800x600 instead of the origonal 640x480 in the expansion pack, the game hasn't updated its graphics engine once.
And even though there's only so far they can go updating the GW engine without estranging players on lower-end equipment, they still have quite a ways they can go.

The thing is, the GW engine will be updated, unlike Diablo2, and in fact, has already been updated. It's never going to be as cutting edge as Fear, Oblivion, etc, but it's never giong to be out of date says Jeff Strain.

I want Guild Wars 2 to play just like Guild Wars, only with more classes, more skills, and more explorable areas.
Kinda like Factions.

Yes, the (framework)Engine has already been updated. But there could be more updates down the line. However, for those of us who can tell, look in the advanced options for the Renderer version. Dx9 people can clearly see that "Renderer: Dx9" is in the options.
There are also visual anomalies as well, like focused bluring of some objects. That was never in the game as far as I could tell.
As for its "Cutting Edged-ness" it is pretty much a new thing. No one has done this kind of engine the way that they have and on such a massive scale. You can "Say" that GW won't have all kinds of HDR effects and dramatic changes in graphics, but who says that you can't with the way the game is constantly updated?
No one thought that the sound engine would be replaced but now its here and DS3D capable. They could replace it again with Dolby capability down the line if they so choose.
